چکیده
Article Summary) The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) with the capability of measuring sea surface temperature (SST) in the presence of clouds, has been providing an unprecedented view of tropical basin-scale SST variability. In this paper, an assessment of the accuracy of the SST derived from TMI over the Bay of Bengal using in situ data collected from moored buoys and research ships, is presented. The authors find that TMI captures the evolution of the SST of the bay on seasonal time scales with reasonable accuracy. The mean difference between the SST from TMI and buoys is less than 0.1°C, and the rms difference is about 0.6°C. The time scales of the intraseasonal variation of the TMI SST are realistic. However, the amplitude of the SST variation on the intraseasonal scale is overestimated by a factor of about 1.3 when compared to buoy data. It is observed that the SST derived from TMI tends to be lower during periods with deep convection or winds stronger than 10 m s^sup -1^, or both. There is better agreement during weak conditions of convection/wind. This leads to a cold bias during convectively active periods when running average SST time series are constructed from SSTs retrieved from the TMI. متن کاملDetermination of land surface temperature and soil moisture from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/Microwave Imager remote sensing data
[1] An analytical algorithm for the determination of land surface temperature and soil moisture from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) remote sensing data has been developed in this study. The error analyses indicate that the uncertainties of the enrolled parameters will not cause serious errors in the proposed algorithm. By applying the proposed algorithm to T...
متن کاملEmpirical Relationship between Sea Surface Tempera- ture and Water Vapor: Improvement of the Physical Model with Remote Sensing Derived Data
We have improved the previous model quantifying the bulk relationship between two key geophysical parameters, sea surface temperature (SST) and water vapor (WV) based on 14-year accumulated datasets. This improvement is achieved by the modification of the physical model derived by Stephens in 1990 and Gaffen et al. in 1992. With this improved model, we estimated WV between 2002 and 2004 using h...
متن کاملDiurnal Variability of Tropical Rainfall Retrieved from Combined GOES and TRMM Satellite Information
Recent progress in satellite remote-sensing techniques for precipitation estimation, along with more accurate tropical rainfall measurements from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and precipitation radar (PR) instruments, have made it possible to monitor tropical rainfall diurnal patterns and their intensities from satellite information. One year (August 1998...

This note describes new developments of retrievals of basic state variables at the air-sea interface as well as rainfall, both essential for the computation of turbulent heat fluxes and the water budget at the sea surface. The Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave imager (TMI) are used to retrieve sea surface temperature, near-surface air s...
